The Province of Southern Leyte celebrated its 50th Founding Anniversary last July 1, 2010. In line with the celebration were series of activities including an agri-fish fair and garden show, street dancing, a cookfest, a live band concert with our local talents, a motocross exhibition and cycling competition, an invitational/inter-town boxing, inter-agency sports competition. Another activity was a quiz bee and a painting contest which was participated by the different schools around the province. There was also a socio-cultural show entitled “Bulawanong Kabilin”, A Grand Cultural and Historical Extravaganza, which showcases the different talents of Southern Leyteños and giving tribute to the Southern Leyteños who were made famous in the field of entertainment like Ms. Regine Velasquez, Mr. Danny Javier of the APO Hiking Society and the Aegis. The highlights of the celebration were the selection of Miss Southern Leyte 2010 and the Sinugdan Festival with its theme – “One Beat, One Faith, One Southern Leyte”. The Sinugdan Festival features the different festivals of Maasin City and the 18 Municipalities of the province.
A little FYI, Southern Leyte officially became a province on July 1, 1960 through Republic Act 2227 authored by Congressman Nicanor Yñiguez (fondly called No Canong) and was signed into law by President Carlos P. Garcia…
